Hunting and fishing are great hobbies for those interested in eating healthy and local foods. But where can you find the best game and the best catch? Here are some of the best catches from different regions.

British Columbia

British Columbia, Canada is home to some of the best hunting in the world. There are few places you can hunt such large and exotic animals; moose, cougar, bear and even lynx, British Columbia has a wide variety of game for all skill levels and interests.

From mid September to the end of October visit Batnuni Lake and take part in the yearly moose hunting season. This area is rife with moose; in fact, a government survey concluded there was an increase in the moose population by more than 2,000 last year, and the bull to cow ratio in this area is one of the highest in British Columbia, says the Batnuni Lake Guides & Outfitters.

In the winter months treat yourself to a cougar or lynx hunt. These majestic animals have acres and acres of space and can be tracked with the help of dogs. The habitat in this region is perfect for these large cats but with the right gear and help you can have a thrilling chase with these animals. While this is a less traditional hunt, it is also one of the most coveted game trophies North America has to offer.

If you’re looking for a good catch, visit Vancouver Island where you can snag halibut, all five species of salmon, and much more. While Vancouver island is an amazing place to go fishing, it’s important to have the correct permit for for operating the watercraft of your choice. Otherwise you might be hit with steep fines, and who wants their exotic fishing trip bogged down with extraneous fees?

Montana

In Montana you can hunt a huge variety of game. Whitetail and mule deer, antelope and elk, bear and moose are all waiting for you in this state. However, it’s a good idea to look out for elk sanctuaries as some lands are protected and off limits to hunters. Because of this you should familiarize yourself with the regulations of the area. A good way of avoiding trespassing onto elk sanctuaries is by carrying a GPS system that you’ve programmed the boundaries into. People who hunt on protected land can face steep fines and even criminal charges. Whole protected land is off limits to hunters, private land isn’t as long as you gain permission from the landowners.

Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge

Kentucky Lake has more fish variety than any other inland wildlife refuge in all of the United States. An estimated 144 species swim these waters. The most common fish known in this lake is crappie, but it also plays host to large and smallmouth bass and catfish, among others. While Kentucky Lake is best known for its fishing, this region also has a variety of game as well. Whitetail deer frequent the shores and surrounding area, as well as turkey and Canadian Geese. The Kentucky Lake area also offers other activities like golfing, camping, hiking, and biking, which makes it a great vacation destination for the whole family.
